SSL (Secure Sockets Layer, technically TLS today) creates an encrypted connection between your visitor's browser and your server. Everything that goes back and forth — logins, forms, payments, emails — becomes unreadable to third parties.
Visitors recognise it from the padlock in the address bar and the "https://" before your domain.
